Your pool filter is the single most important component in keeping your swimming pool clean. Filtration operating hours vary for different pools, locations and bather loads. Generally, a minimum of 8 hours a day in summer and 4 to 6 hours per day in the winter is recommended.
Normally, pool water evaporation is about 1″ to 2½″ per week depending on the weather and bather load. To determine if you have a leak, you can perform a simple bucket test using an ordinary plastic bucket:
1. Bring pool water to normal level (middle of skimmer)
2. Place a bucket beside the pool in an exposed location
3. Fill the bucket with water to the brim
4. Shut off the pump and mark the pool water level on the outside of the bucket
5. Resume normal pump operation
After 24 to 48 hours, compare the two water levels:
• If the pool water level (outside mark) goes down more than the water level inside the bucket, you probably have a leak
In case of rain, repeat the test (be sure that if your pool is equipped with an auto-fill to shut off the water supply). Accurate marks are critical during this process.
A full water test should be done at least once a month. The more use the pool is getting or, the more rain we have, the more important it is to get the pool tested.
The sand in a sand filter needs to be replaced between every 7-10 years. If you are running the filter continuously and you find the water does not appear clear or the filter requires more frequent backwashing then it’s definitely time for new sand/glass.
This is dependant on the size of the pool, pump, chlorinator, bather load & location however as a guide in the summer generally about 8 hours and during the winter about half that.
